1/13/23 Community Council Minutes 

 

  1. Welcome: Tyler King, Angie Erickson, Julie Simmons, Sara Farris, Josh Sawyer, Mike Hipwell, Katie Brown, Harry Short

 

  1. PTSA Report: 
    1. PTSA Student Representatives is a newly formed group this year.  They are meeting once a month to discuss school activities and service opportunities. They will be receiving hoodies for Christmas.  
    2. PTSA will host the Valentines stomp, scheduled for February 14th, 12:30-2:00.  Students did not participate in the Reflections program this year (not one entry).
    3.  The current budget was reviewed; the total ending balance was $7,242.89.
    4.  Current PTSA will begin to recruit possible volunteers for next year; looking for ideas for nominating a committee head. 
    5. Rachel Clark will be working on a Christmas Tree for the Christmas Tree Jubilee. There will not be a PTSA meeting in December. 
  2. Counselor Report (Matt Deamer)
    1. Needs Assessment Survey:  Academic, Career, and Social-Emotional Wellness. 
      1. We are working to make sure we understand the needs of our kids, parents, teachers and students; we value their input. We do this survey every 3 years, it is a state requirement and a survey that drives our decisions. We have had 750 students answer the survey.   
    2. PCCRs - Counselors have been meeting with all of the 8th grade students to set goals and make sure they have the classes they need. We reach out to all the 8th grade parents and these are one-on-one discussions with counselors, students and parents. If parents can’t come, we meet with students individually, or include parents in a Google Meet. 
    3. Panorama: 
      1. Areas to Celebrate: Self Management, Social Awareness, Emotional Wellness are in a high percentile (green zone). 
      2. Areas for improvement: Teacher-Student Relationships (20-39); Sense of Belonging (20-39); Grit 0-19th (all are in the red zone). 
    4. Academic Incentives Approved: (Matt) Movie on December 5th (PG Rating) 3.0, no N/U
    5. New Class Offerings for 2024-25 school Year: Matt Deamer
      1. CCA - Outdoor Grilling (Teacher: Janet Weaver)
      2. Latinos in Action: (Teacher: Kassidi Gonthier) Latinos in Action (LIA) is a class that empowers Latino youth to be college and career ready through service, leadership, culture, and excellence in education. 

In this course, LIA students:

  • engage culturally relevant, social and emotional aligned, and college readiness curriculum which focuses heavily on leadership and service learning.  
  • meet in committees on a weekly basis in order to plan and execute service activities, projects, and presentations that will impact their school, community, and/or city throughout the school year. 
  • serve as role models, mentors, and reading tutors for elementary school students, helping both parties develop linguistic proficiency, social skills, and a deeper understanding of the importance of being bilingual and bicultural.  
  1. Professional Development - (Tyler) Our teachers & Admin have or will participate in:
    1. ELA Teachers: UCTE Conference (TSSA Funded $85 x 6) - Writing practices, Digital Lit.
    2. Instructional Coaches: Text: Reading, Teach Like a Champion (Classroom Management, Research-Based Instructional Strategies…)
    3. 10/27/23 - District-Wide PD for Educators & Admin: Classroom/Behavior Management, Digital Learning & Technology, Grant Writing, Content-Specific Writing …)
    4. 1/12/23 - School-Level PD (Currently collecting ideas from our Collaborative Leadership Team.) 
  2. USBE Data (Tyler) CC members can dive deeper using the following links; this is a summary:
    1. School Overall Performance Report: Achievement (Typical), Growth (Exemplary), English Learners Progress (Developing). 
    2. School Profile/Enrollment: Economically Disadvantaged 20%; Students with Disabilities 10%; English Language Learners 2%; Caucasian 85%; Hispanic 10%; Asian 1%; Multi-racial 2%
    3. Homework Haven: (Land Trust Funded) - Currently we do not have a lot of students participating in Homework Haven; however our math dept. will encourage students to come after school for math help if they are struggling. 
  3. Student Advocates & Tier II Framework (Student Advocates are funded through our Land Trust. Advocates are working on the following: (Kaylee Brown, Sadie Wayment) 
    1. Tutoring during KOTR with NJHS students. 
    2. Aide in ELL Class
    3. General Ed Push-In
    4. Academic Tracking & one-on-one goal setting
    5. Home Visits- Non attenders 
    6. Other Tier II Interventions: Options, Co-Teaching, Student Success Team; MHS (TSSA Funded) - Counseling Groups (Anxiety, Social Skills),  Lunch Bunch, In-School Solutions (Educational, Restorative practices), Intramurals/Supervision (TSSA Funded) Credit Recovery (TSSA Funded), Homework Haven (TSSA Funded)--Do we still keep in place and try to promote (only 1-2 students/week). 
  4. NAL & Volleyball Season as of 11/10 
    1. VB - 3 wins, 1 loss
    2. NAL - 4 wins, 0 loss
